Frequently Asked Questions About Our Practice

What is the difference between a dentist and a periodontist?

Both periodontists and dentists graduate from dental school after earning a DDS or DMD degree, but periodontists continue their studies with two to three years of additional training and education focusing on periodontal care and implant dentistry. This means that periodontists have more knowledge and experience relating to the jawbone and gums than general or family dentists.

Why should I see a periodontist?

Some dentists offer scaling and root planing for gum disease, but when a case is complex or unresponsive to treatment, patients are usually referred to a periodontist. Other reasons you might need to see a periodontist are for dental implants and oral health issues that originate with the supporting structures of the teeth (the gums or jawbone), rather than the teeth themselves.

Can you fix periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease can be reversed when treated in its earliest stages, preventing any permanent damage to the teeth and gums. When periodontal disease is treated in its later stages, the infection can be cured, but it’s likely that you will require additional procedures like bone and gum grafting to repair the damage it has caused.

Are dental implants right for me?

Dental implants are usually a fit for patients who are in good health, don’t smoke, and have the jawbone density needed to support an implant and the restoration attached to it. If you have health issues or you’ve suffered bone loss in the jaw, you may still be eligible for dental implants, but you will likely need a supplementary procedure prior to implant surgery or a less-invasive dental implant procedure like mini dental implants.

Can dental implants be done in one day?

Yes, there are some types of implant restorations that can be completed in one day. Dr. Quinta will let you know if you’re a candidate for one of these procedures when you come in for a consultation.
