Post Operative Instructions
- MEDICATIONS: Take all medications as prescribed.
- FOR PAIN: Take Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) 600mg three times per day for 2- 3 days (***IF ALLERGIC OR SENSITIVE*** take Tylenol 500mg 4 times per day).
- BLEEDING/ BRUISING/ SWELLING:
- Bleeding and possible bruising is normal (greatest 2-3 days after the surgery).
- Use an ice pack (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off) for the first 4-6 hours.
- Some bleeding is normal within the first few hours following surgery.
- If swelling gets worse or does not start to decline after 3-4 days please contact our office.
- BRUSHING/ FLOSSING:
- No Brushing or flossing for 2 weeks in surgical area/s.
- Use the rinse (Perioguard, Peridex) if prescribed and start rinsing two times per day (30 Seconds) beginning the morning after surgery (do not swallow the rinse).
- PERIODONTAL BANDAGE: A periodontal bandage may have been placed. If the bandage becomes dislodged, gently remove it and take extra care to avoid the area.
- FOOD:
- Avoid eating hot temperature foods for 5-7 days.
- Avoid hard/ crunchy foods for 2 weeks and chew in areas that were not involved in the surgery.
- No vigorous rinsing or drinking through a straw for the first 3-4 days.
- ACTIVITY: Rest. No strenuous (running/ heavy lifting) activity for at least 3- 4 days.
- NO SMOKING: For at least 2 weeks (switch to a patch if needed): Smoking will interfere with healing.
